1. iOS update-related issues

CarPlay is an iOS feature, and each update often includes bug fixes and new compatibility support.

How do you know when this is the issue? Most likely, CarPlay won’t launch; it connects briefly, then disconnects, or your car doesn't detect your phone.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

  • Make sure you're running the latest iOS version.

  • Connect to Wi-Fi and update if necessary.

  • After updating, reboot your iPhone, then try reconnecting.

Another common issue is when Apple CarPlay stops working after updating to iOS 18 (or any higher version).

It must be a data transfer cable, not just a regular charging cable. Some people try up to six different ones before finding one that works. Some cables are only for charging and won’t work for data.

Also, even if you're setting up wireless CarPlay, Apple says you must connect it with a data cable to get it working.

  • Use a USB-A to USB-C cable that supports both data transfer and charging.

3. CarPlay Not Allowed When Locked

4. Siri is Disabled

Apple CarPlay is designed to be hands-free, and many of its features rely on Siri, Apple’s voice assistant. Some cars won’t even allow CarPlay to launch if Siri is off, especially for wireless CarPlay.

You just need to  turn Siri back on in your iPhone settings. Here’s how:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone

  • Scroll down and tap Siri & Search

  • Turn ON the following:

  • Listen for “Hey Siri.”

5. USB Restricted Mode is On

  • Go to Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode if your phone has a fingerprint scanner)

6. Too Many Devices Paired in a Car

  • Go to your car’s Bluetooth or Phone settings

  • Keep only your iPhone and maybe one backup device

  • Now, try reconnecting your iPhone to CarPlay

Check your phone if your car is still listed under Bluetooth or CarPlay.

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth

  • Tap the (i) next to your car’s name

  • Tap Forget This Device

  • Then reconnect from scratch. This means 

7. VPN is On

If you're experiencing weird CarPlay behavior, such as your internet being spotty or not working, your iPhone saying "Connected" but nothing working, and CarPlay showing a blank screen or refusing to launch, it’s likely a VPN issue. 

Your phone may have a VPN from Google, which prevents it from connecting to WiFi or CarPlay.

  • Go to Settings> General> VPN and Device Management. 

  • Then you can turn off the VPN by toggling it off. 

  • You can delete it if you don’t need it.

Restart your phone after turning off or deleting the VPN. Then, reconnect your phone to your car.
